2026 Danny Rumph Classic: Philly Basketball’s Summer Tradition Returns

Philadelphia basketball has plenty of summer traditions, but few carry the combination of competition, community and purpose that surrounds the Danny Rumph Classic.

The Rumph Classic was created in memory of Danny Rumph, the Philadelphia basketball standout who died from sudden cardiac arrest in 2005 while playing the game he loved. What began as a way for friends and the basketball community to honor Rumph has developed into one of Philadelphia’s signature summer basketball events. The tournament also supports the Danny Rumph Foundation’s work around heart health, including screenings and providing automated external defibrillators to community organizations.

Now, the 2026 Rumph Classic represents another chapter in that legacy.

More Than a Pro-Am

The attraction is obvious: high-level basketball.

Over the years, the Rumph Classic has attracted NBA players, overseas professionals, college standouts and some of Philadelphia’s best homegrown talent. Players such as Jayson Tatum, Tyrese Maxey, James Harden and Jalen Brunson have appeared at the event in previous years.

But what separates the Rumph from an ordinary summer tournament is the atmosphere surrounding the basketball.

This is Philadelphia.

Every possession matters to somebody in the gym. The crowd knows basketball. Players hear it when they make a big play—and they definitely hear it when they don’t. The energy can make a summer game feel like a playoff game.

The 2025 tournament showed just how much the event continues to grow. The 20th annual championship was played at Drexel University’s Daskalakis Athletic Center, where Blue Magic defeated Training by Brunner, 93-89, behind a huge second half from tournament MVP Archie Goodwin.

That sets the stage for 2026.

The names may change. New teams will emerge. Another player may turn himself into the talk of Philadelphia basketball for a weekend. But the foundation of the Rumph Classic remains the same.

Competition. Community. Legacy.

For young players sitting in the stands, the Classic is also a chance to see professional basketball up close. For Philadelphia basketball veterans, it’s a reunion. For the players, it’s an opportunity to compete in front of one of the toughest basketball crowds in the country.

And behind every dunk, three-pointer and packed-gym moment remains the reason everyone is there:

Danny Rumph.

More than two decades after his passing, his name continues bringing Philadelphia together through basketball while spreading a message that extends far beyond the court.

The 2026 Danny Rumph Classic isn’t simply another tournament on the summer schedule. It’s Philly basketball playing for something bigger.
